Privacy Policy
The short version:
- Your location history is recorded only during outings you start, and lives on your device by default.
- If you sign in, your explored map and trips sync to our servers so you can restore and share them. That's the only reason we hold them.
- We never sell your data. There are no ads and no third-party advertising trackers.
- The waitlist email is used for launch news only.
- You can delete everything, at any time.
1. Who we are
Mappa is operated by Mappa ("we", "us"). This policy covers the Mappa iOS app and this website. Questions to hello@joinmappa.app.
2. What we collect
Location history
Recording where you've been is the entire point of the app, so this is the data we take most seriously. Location is recorded only while an outing you started is active — including in the background with the screen locked, for the duration of that outing. It is stored on your device first. We do not track you passively, and stopping an outing stops recording.
Account details
If you create an account we collect your email address, used to send sign-in codes and essential service messages.
Synced data
Signing in enables sync: your explored areas, trips, and places are copied to our backend (hosted on Supabase) so you can restore them on a new phone and share trips with friends you invite. Without an account, this data never leaves your device.
Photos
Trip photos stay on your device. We read photo metadata (including location tags) on-device to place photos on your map. A photo is only uploaded if you explicitly add it to a shared trip.
Map tiles
Like any map app, displaying the map requests tiles from our map provider (Mapbox), which necessarily receives your IP address and the map areas you view. This is not linked to your Mappa account.
Website waitlist
If you join the waitlist we store your email address and use it solely to tell you about the launch. Every email includes an unsubscribe link.
Website analytics
We use Cloudflare Web Analytics on this website to count visits and see which pages are used. It is privacy-first: it sets no cookies, does not fingerprint your device, and cannot be used to track you across other sites. We only ever see aggregate figures, never individuals.
3. What we never do
- We never sell your personal data.
- We show no ads and embed no advertising or cross-site trackers.
- We never share your location history with anyone except the friends you explicitly invite to a shared trip.
4. Storage and retention
On-device data stays until you delete it or the app. Synced data is kept while your account is active. Waitlist emails are deleted once the launch campaign ends or when you unsubscribe.
5. Your rights
Under UK and EU data protection law you can request access to, correction of, or deletion of your personal data, and you can withdraw consent at any time. You can delete your account and synced data from inside the app, or email us and we'll handle it within 30 days.
6. Children
Mappa is not directed at children under 13, and we don't knowingly collect their data.
7. Changes
If we change this policy we'll update this page and, for material changes, tell you in the app or by email.
